Homeschool Activities

Does your child love using both sides of their brain? Do they love design and problem-solving? Maybe they’re hungry to learn more about robotics than you can teach them, or they’re looking for ways to take their art to the next level. The STEAM Engine is here to help!

We believe in the power of hands-on, student-directed, project-based learning. To help students explore the possibilities at the intersection of art and technology, we offer one-sitting and ongoing project-based lessons for homeschooled students ages 9-18, customized to suit your child’s needs and interests.

  1. One-sitting projects: We lead a ~2 hour hands-on project focused on building your child’s problem-solving, creativity, and digital literacy skills. Some examples of one-sitting projects are 3D-Printed Maze Toys, Robotic Claw Rapid Prototyping, and Laser-Cut Jewelry.

  2. On-going lessons: We lead a series of 1-2 hour projects, focused on developing your child’s understanding of a particular STEM skill or theme. We can offer any of our after-school class series to homeschool students during the school day, or curate a set of projects for your child around a topic like “3D Printing”, “Environmental Engineering”, or “Art and Technology”.

  3. Support student-driven projects: Maybe your student is already in the middle of an ambitious STEM or art project, and is starting to realize they need more help than YouTube can offer. Maybe they have an idea for something they want to create using a 3D-printer, or they want to enter an engineering competition. Whatever the project, we coach students through the design process, project management, and specific technical skills they need to make their project a reality, as well as providing the equipment they need for the hands-on work.

 FAQs

  • Exact pricing will depend on what exactly you'd like to do, so please contact us for a quote. As a very general ballpark, we typically charge $50/hr for 1 student, and an additional $25/hr for each additional student, plus a material fee depending on the project(s).

  • Location can be flexible depending on the project. In general, I am happy to bring my equipment to you if you are located in King or Snohomish County.

  • For instructor-lead projects and lessons, we cap groups at 5 students, and recommend they all be around the same age. If more than 5 students in your family or co-op want to do a project or series, we are happy to run multiple sessions.

For older students working on student-driven projects, we may be able to accommodate larger groups.

  • We take pride in being inclusive, and are always happy to discuss accommodations for students. While we hope to be able to work with you in setting your child up for success, we don't have any instructors with formal training in special education, and may not be able to accommodate all needs. If you have a specific question about your child, please reach out!
