Private Lessons
If you want to learn how to use cutting edge makerspace equipment, you’ve come to the right place!
Getting started with a new high-tech toy can be intimidating! Whether you’ve just bought a new 3D-printer and need help getting going, are trying to figure out what kind of laser cutter you should get for your Etsy shop, or want to encourage your child’s interest in circuits, The STEAM Engine will meet you where you are and help you achieve your goals through private, 1:1 lessons for children (ages 9+) and adults. Our main areas of focus for private lessons are:
3D-printing: learn how to use design software, how to operate and care for a 3D-printer, and best practices for making your projects come out beautifully every time
Laser-cutting: learn how to use laser design software, how to use and maintain your laser cutter, and the pros and cons of different materials
Hobby electronics: learn how to build and program circuits using the Arduino microcontroller

FAQs

Lessons cost $150/hr, which includes some basic consumable supplies (plastic filament for the 3D-printer, wood for the laser cutter, etc). This price does not include the cost of the 3D printer, laser cutter, or electronics kit.

You have the option of using my equipment during lessons; however, students tend to learn best when they have their own equipment to practice and experiment with between lessons. If you need help deciding what model of 3D-printer, laser cutter, or electronics kit to purchase, I am happy to discuss the pros and cons of various options during our first session.

Generally, lessons take place where the equipment is. If you're using my equipment, we can meet at my house in Everett; if you have your own equipment we'll meet at yours. For students under 18 having lessons in their home, a parent must be home at all times during the lesson.

Parents are welcome to join in with their child's lessons. These lessons can be a great bonding experience for parents and children with shared interests, and having parents involved often helps children stay engaged with their new hobby when formal lessons conclude.

Lessons are typically available on Monday-Thursday evenings, and on Sundays.
